3 Key Movement Patterns Every Young Athlete Should Master
When you’re a young athlete, it’s tempting to think that progress is all about lifting heavy weights and pushing yourself to the limit. But the truth is, performance isn’t built on how much you can lift—it’s built on how well you move. At The Well, we see it every day: athletes who come in wanting to get bigger and faster, but they’re missing the most important piece—good movement.
Movement quality is the foundation. It’s what keeps kids safe, healthy, and playing the sports they love for the long haul. And it’s not just about safety—it’s about building confidence, too. When athletes move well, they feel strong, they trust their bodies, and they’re ready to face any challenge that comes their way.
Why Movement Quality Matters
So, what does moving well really mean? At The Well, it comes down to three fundamental movement patterns: squats, hinges, and presses. These are the basics, but they’re the key to unlocking everything else.
✅ Squats
Squats are the cornerstone of lower-body strength. When athletes squat with proper form, they’re not just working their legs—they’re training their hips, core, and even their upper back to work together. This means more power in their jumps, better balance when they change direction, and stronger legs that can take a hit and keep going.
✅ Hinges
Hinges, like deadlifts and kettlebell swings, are all about the posterior chain—the muscles along the back of the body. These muscles are critical for speed and injury prevention. When an athlete learns to hinge properly, they’re setting themselves up for powerful sprints, explosive jumps, and a strong back that can handle the demands of any sport.
✅ Presses
Presses build upper-body strength and stability. They’re not just for looking good—they help protect the shoulders and improve posture. When athletes can press well, they’re ready to push, brace, and hold their ground on the field or court.
Confidence Starts with Movement
Here’s the best part: learning these patterns early doesn’t just make kids safer—it makes them feel unstoppable. When a young athlete knows how to move well, they feel confident. They walk onto the field ready to compete, because they know they’re strong, balanced, and in control.
How We Help at The Well
At The Well, our Youth Athlete Program is built on these movement patterns. We don’t rush kids into lifting heavy weights—they’ve got time for that. We start by making sure they’re moving safely and powerfully, so they can keep getting better without getting hurt.
