When people walk into The Well today, they see a 4,000 sq. ft. facility with plenty of equipment and space to move.
But that’s not where it started.
Our first year looked very different.
Parking Lot Workouts
The Well began in a parking lot while I was still in college. We had minimal equipment, but people needed a place to train and connect, so we showed up on the asphalt and made it work.
Some days it rained, some days the wind cut through, but workouts still happened. That’s when I learned an important lesson—you don’t need perfect conditions to get stronger. You just need to start.
Storage Unit Training
Through that first summer, we moved into a storage unit. It wasn’t pretty—concrete floors, rolling the door up, dragging equipment in and out—but it gave us a roof.
We trained through the heat and tight quarters, but it worked. That little unit reminded me that effort matters more than environment.
Door to Door, Then the Garage
When winter was coming, I knew the storage unit wouldn’t cut it. I literally went door to door, walking from business to business, asking if anyone had space to sublet so we could keep training.
Eventually, we landed in a rented garage. It was cramped, the porta potty out back was the only bathroom, and it was far from ideal. But it gave us shelter and consistency. And in those months, we started to feel like maybe this could actually grow into something bigger.
The Lesson
That first year taught me lessons I’ll never forget:
- There’s no perfect time.
- There’s no perfect place.
- Progress comes from starting where you are and taking the next step.
The Well has come a long way since those days. But the foundation is still the same—showing up, working hard, and moving forward.
If we could start in a parking lot, move to a storage unit, and keep pushing in a rented garage with a porta potty out back, you can start right where you are.
