A Coach’s Guide to Mental and Emotional Wellness That Sticks
“Hey Sam, how do we feel better?”
A member asked me that last week.
And I paused.
Not because I didn’t know what to say, but because I knew the quick answer wouldn’t do the question justice.
They weren’t asking about soreness or energy levels. They were talking about feeling better on a deeper level—mentally, emotionally, spiritually.
As a fitness coach, I spend a lot of time helping people move better, eat better, and live longer. But over the years, I’ve realized this:
Most people don’t come to the gym just to look better.
They want to feel better. In every part of life.
So let’s talk about how we actually get there.
First: Acknowledge That “Feeling Better” Isn’t Just a Mood
Feeling better isn’t a light switch.
It’s not “happy” or “sad.”
It’s not “on” or “off.”
It’s layered. It involves our environment, daily actions, relationships, physical habits, and mental inputs.
If we want to feel better long-term, we need to zoom out and look at the whole picture.
1. Audit Your Circle: Who Are You Around?
The fastest way to change how you feel is to change who you’re around.
That might sound harsh, but it’s true.
We become like the people we spend the most time with.
If you’re surrounded by people who complain, quit, gossip, or numb themselves with distractions—you’ll start to do the same.
But if you’re around people who challenge themselves, stay consistent, speak positively, and cheer others on?
You’ll feel more hopeful. More empowered. More grounded.
That’s what happens every day at The Well.
We’re not just training bodies here—we’re strengthening mindsets.
You’ll see a group of people lifting weights, yes, but you’ll also hear them laughing, checking in on each other, and encouraging the person next to them.
Action Step: Take a look at your week. Who did you spend the most time with?
Now ask: do these people lift me up? Or wear me down?
If you need a reset, come find us. We’ve built the kind of place where people leave lighter than they came in.
2. Move Your Body, Even When You Don’t Feel Like It
This isn’t about chasing six-pack abs.
It’s about your brain.
Movement improves mood. Every time.
You don’t need to crush a 60-minute workout to get the benefit. You just need to move—enough to send your body the signal that you’re not stuck.
Even a 10-minute walk or a quick set of air squats, pushups, and stretches can flip the switch.
At The Well, we help our members find a movement rhythm that fits real life—so exercise doesn’t become another thing to feel guilty about, but a tool to use when life gets heavy.
Action Step: Choose one movement “reset” you can fall back on this week when stress hits.
Examples:
- A short walk before work
- 3 rounds of 10 squats, 10 pushups, 10 sit-ups
- 10 minutes of stretching with deep breathing
3. Create a Routine That Grounds You
When life feels chaotic, the brain craves certainty—something stable to hold onto.
That’s where routines come in.
And no, we don’t need to build some Instagram-perfect morning routine that takes two hours.
But we do need anchors—simple habits that help us feel in control of our day.
Here’s a simple framework we teach our clients:
🌀 Anchor 1: Start with purpose. One positive thing when you wake up (stretch, journal, prayer, walk, no phone for 10 minutes)
🌀 Anchor 2: Move with intention. One fitness habit, even if it’s small
🌀 Anchor 3: Fuel with care. One better nutrition decision (drink water, eat protein, prep a lunch)
🌀 Anchor 4: End with peace. One wind-down ritual (read, hot shower, gratitude list)
Action Step: Pick two anchors to try this week. You’ll be amazed at how small changes build momentum.
4. Stop Thinking You Have to Do It Alone
Isolation is a trap.
And it’s one of the easiest ways to spiral. When we feel low, we withdraw. We skip the gym. We stop replying. We pretend we’re fine.
But we’re not meant to do this alone.
At The Well, one of the things we hear most from new members is:
“I didn’t know how much I needed this community until I found it.”
The laughter. The check-ins. The high-fives. The accountability.
That stuff matters just as much as the workout.
You don’t need a giant social circle—you need the right people in your corner.
Action Step: If you’re feeling stuck or unmotivated, reach out. Not to complain, but to connect. Text a friend. Book a No-Sweat Intro. Come in. Let us walk with you.
Feeling Better is a Skill
You won’t always feel like feeling better.
But you can take action anyway.
And when you do that long enough, your mind will catch up to your body.
If you’ve been feeling off lately, please know this:
You’re not broken. You don’t need to go it alone. And you don’t need to be perfect to start.
You just need to take one step forward. Then another. Then another.
We’ll meet you there.
