HELP—I Can’t Get Off the Toilet!

Why do aging adults end up needing help with everyday living? Simple. They can’t get off the loo on their own. Sounds funny, but it’s no laughing matter.

What it boils down to is this – as we age, we move less. Retirement kicks in, we’re less busy, and end up sitting more. This isn’t great, because our muscles start to waste away.

That’s why it’s so important to keep moving as we get older. Sticking to some form of exercise helps us stay independent for longer. This isn’t just for us, but also so our kids don’t have to look after us or fork out cash for it.

Even though we age, the kind of exercises we do shouldn’t change much. Standing up from the loo is like doing a squat. If you fall and get back up, it’s like doing a burpee. And carrying groceries from the car? That’s a farmers carry.

Aging adult athletes might not be smashing gym records, but they can definitely do a simpler version of what everyone else is doing. And a good coach can help guide them. The effort they put in will depend on each person, but the goal is always the same – to keep moving.

It’s super important for aging adults to keep up with strength training because it helps keep their bones strong. If they slip and fall, having stronger bones means they’re less likely to break something. So, lifting heavy stuff can really help increase bone strength.

Over at The Well Health + Fitness, we’ve got plenty of over 50s working out with us. Some of them love group fitness classes, others prefer one-to-one sessions. But the main thing is they’re all keeping active.

Look, I’m no elite athlete. I’m not going to win any competitions or break any records. I might joke about it, but the reason I work out every day is simple. I want to stay as independent as possible and avoid getting stuck in a situation where I can’t even manage the simple things.
