Does Every Workout Need To Be Hard?

No, and they shouldn’t be.

I remember a time when I thought every workout needed to absolutely kick my butt and leave me gasping for air. Because that’s what we were told right? “Pain is weakness leaving the body” “Sweating is your fat crying” etc etc…

There’s a difference between training hard and training effectively. Our bodies weren’t designed to go 110% everyday (and neither were our minds, but that blog is for a different day), so how do we tell the difference between training hard and training effectively?

Let’s start with recovery. If I am always tired, sore, and feeling drained, I am most likely just training hard (over-training). Sure, I can push through a week of hard workouts, but what about the next week? And the week after that?

Training effectively means that some days will feel like a walk through, just moving the body properly, and increasing blood flow. Perhaps the next day is a hard aerobic capacity day, lots of breathing and sweating. Finally, maybe the following day is more strength focused, pushing heavy weight with lots of rest time.

A properly programmed exercise routine does not ask “How am I going to train hard/effectively Today?” It begins with “What will allow me to push my body and mind to its max potential this Month/Year?”. The secret isn’t doing 200 burpee box jumps everyday.

Training effectively means finding a balance between intensity and rest, and designing a program that is tailored to your goals and takes into account your current fitness level and any physical limitations you may have. It is important to listen to your body and allow for sufficient recovery time to avoid overtraining and burnout.
