Breaking the All-or-Nothing Mindset: How to Rebuild Momentum One Habit at a Time

The Pain Point: “If I Can’t Do Everything, I Do Nothing”

If you’ve ever felt like you’re either fully “on track” or completely “off the rails,” you’re not alone. A lot of us struggle with an all-or-nothing mindset when it comes to health and fitness.

You’re locked in… workouts are consistent… nutrition feels dialed in…

Then life happens.

A busy week. A stressful season. A holiday schedule.
And suddenly it feels like everything falls apart.

Instead of adjusting expectations, many people stop altogether — and that’s where momentum gets lost.

This time of year tends to amplify that feeling. So I want to share a simple way to rebuild progress without overwhelm.

The Shift: Focus on One Habit Instead of Everything at Once

When you’re trying to restart your routine, the worst thing you can do is attempt to return to every habit you used to do at your peak.

Instead, pick back up just one habit — the easiest one you normally do when you’re “on.”

Not the hardest.
Not the one that looks good on paper.
The one that feels doable today.

That’s where momentum begins.

My Personal Example: The Habits I Come Back To

Here are some of the habits that normally anchor my lifestyle when I’m consistent:

  • 10,000 steps per day
  • A gallon of water
  • Strength training 3–4 days per week
  • A daily protein shake
  • Around 150 grams of protein per day

But here’s the important part…
These didn’t happen overnight. They took time to build. They became second nature after repetition and patience, not perfection.

So don’t compare your Chapter One to someone else’s Chapter Twenty.

Progress Isn’t About Being Perfect — It’s About Small Wins

Over the past week, I haven’t hit all of those habits. Realistically, I’ve probably hit about 35% of them.

But today, my win is water.
Tomorrow, my focus will be steps.

That may sound small… but small wins compound.

That’s how momentum is rebuilt.
Not through intensity.
Through consistency.

The Solution: One Habit at a Time

If you’ve been stuck, here’s your starting point:

  1. Choose one habit that feels easy today
  2. Do it consistently for a few days
  3. Once it feels natural… stack the next one

No pressure. No guilt. No “restart Monday.”

Just progress.

Because momentum comes from small, repeatable actions, not perfection.
